The Flames have been off to an aggressive start to this year’s off season. First, obtaining veteran goaltender Mike Smith from the Arizona Coyotes to help bolster the leadership core and finally solve Calgary’s net minding ambiguity. The Flames took a chance trading for Mike Smith, who will be turning 36 this season. But, no one can forget the most recent Cinderella run the Coyotes had a few years back where Smith literally carried the team to a Western Conference Final appearance. With international experience, over 12 years in the NHL – this guy might be Calgary’s short term solution. Great guy in the locker room, with a defensive core that the Flames boast – this could be the dark horse team of the year. Additionally, the Flames went out with a “win-now” mentality in acquiring Travis Hamonic. This guy is an almost perfect fit with Calgary’s defensive core.

With their star players Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan scratching the surface of reaching the peaks of their careers, it is in no doubt that you may see this team go deep in the playoffs. Their young players namely, Micheal Ferland, Sam Bennet, and Mathew Tkachuk have no shortage of talent and the ability to step up when it means the most.

The key factor here is that the Flames executive staff did their research – and they did it well. Playing in arguably the easiest division, Calgary hopes to make an impact next season. Powerhouse teams like San Jose and Los Angeles are deemed to regress this upcoming season. The Flames will be able to feast on teams like Vancouver and Arizona, not to mention Smith will be extra fired up to play his former mates… The only team to really watch out for is the Edmonton Oilers... yikes… I bet every team in the league is going to be scared of them…

Finally let’s take a look at Calgary’s top lines:

Gaudreau – Monahan – Ferland

Tkachuk – Bennett – Frolik

Bouma – Backlaund – Brouwer

Giordano – D. Hamilton

Brodie – Hamonic

Solid up and down the core – let’s just hope this team can stay healthy because trust me, they will be one of the most exhilarating teams this year.
