Top 10 Free Agents

It is almost that time of year again… Almost every Canadian will be out and about July 1st celebrating the birth of the nation – but for most unemployed hockey players they will probably be beach side with their agents listening to phone calls and watching their futures unfold. Here is the go to guide for this year’s top 10 NHL Free Agents.

1. Kevin Shattenkirk RD

This guy is the big fish in this year’s market – he will likely set the benchmark salary for defencemen in the league. He is an offensive minded power play specialist with the capabilities of being a wall defensively.

Likely destination: New York Rangers

2. Alexander Radulov RW

Not much needs to be said about this guy. He is your typical Russian sniper who shows up to play when he wants to. He has one of the highest offensive upsides and proved he plays with heart as seen during last year’s playoff run. This guy better not leave the beloved Canadiens.

Likely destination: Montreal Canadiens

3. Joe Thornton C

Big Joe – what a career this guy has had. On the back nine of his career, maybe even the last hole, this player could still put up assists like he has done his entire life. It will be sad to see if he leave the Sharks, but it is time to move on. I picture this guy playing centre along side a couple kids who like to put the puck in the back of the net.

Likely destination: San Jose Sharks, Nashville Predators or Ottawa Senators

4. Justin Williams RW

Veteran goal scorer who possess a talent that is rare to find – he just cannot stop scoring when it matters in the playoffs. This guy will still put up 15 goals this season no doubt.

Likely destination: St. Louis Blues

5. Brendan Smith LD

Smith is a big shutdown defensemen who from time to time likes to score a handful of goals. He could fit right in as a top 4 pairing on pretty much any team – but at a cost, especially if Shattenkirk gets signed first.

Likely destination: New York Rangers

6. Nick Bonino C

Stanley Cup champ, 3rd line faceoff man, penalty killer, and reliable in both ends. This guy screams value.

Likely destination: Nashville Predators or Florida Panthers

7. Martin Hanzal C

Similar to Bonino – minus the experience. Hanzal is a big guy who can play top minutes.

Likely destination: Edmonton Oilers or Winnipeg Jets

8. Trevor Daley LD

Another piece from the Stanley Cup champion team who has to be let go. Two way defender who boast a resume of experience, any team would benefit from his presence.

Likely destination: Detroit Red Wings

9. Patrick Marleau LW/RW

It is the beginning of a new era in California. Marleau, arguably the most consistent player in terms of games played vs goals scored throughout his entire career, needs to find a home with a serious cup contender.

Likely destination: St. Louis Blues or Nashville Predators

10. Brian Boyle C

It is possible that this is the most liked/hated guy in the league – if he’s on your team you love him and if he’s not… well good luck. An absolute monster in the faceoff dot who loves crushing bodies – Boyle is the perfect number 4 center for any team.

Likely destination: Tampa Bay Lightning
